Durham, North Carolina-based Wolfspeed, a developer and manufacturer of wide-bandgap semiconductors, focused on silicon carbide and gallium nitride materials, is restructuring, closing its Durham device fabrication plant and implementing a 20% reduction in its workforce. as it transitions to a new product offering.

Approximately 1,000 employees will be impacted by the restructuring.

According to CEO Gregg Lowe, "To drive operational improvements, we are taking action to enhance efficiency, align our business with current market conditions, and become the first silicon carbide company to transition to pure-play 200-millimeter. The transition to a fully 200-millimeter platform allows us to take further initiatives to streamline our cost structure, including closing our manual Durham 150-millimeter Fab, other manufacturing footprint rationalization, and reducing our workforce.”

Santa Clara, California-based Advanced Micro Devices, a fabless semiconductor company that designs, develops, and sells computer processors and related technologies for business and consumer markets, has announced a 4% reduction in its workforce.

The reduction will impact 1,000, including 29 employees located in California.

According to a company spokesperson, “As a part of aligning our resources with our largest growth opportunities, we are taking a number of targeted steps that will unfortunately result in reducing our global workforce by approximately 4%. We are committed to treating impacted employees with respect and helping them through this transition.”

Santa Clara, California-based Pure Storage, a developer of all-flash data storage hardware and software products, has announced a 4% reduction in its workforce.

The headcount realignment will impact approximatel 275 employees, including those in data protection, AI & analytics, database, alliances, and unstructured data operations. This follows two previous layoffs in 2023.

A company spokesperson noted, “As Pure continues to scale and maintain a record of high growth and innovation, we recently completed a workforce rebalancing initiative to align our employees with company priorities and areas that are strategic to the business. The employees affected by this initiative were eligible to apply to open roles and also offered outplacement services to assist with their job search outside of Pure.”
