AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT PUBLISHERS CLEARING HOUSE

Jericho, New York-based Publishers Clearing House, a direct marketer of merchandise and periodicals and famed for its big-dollar give-away contests, has announced it is discontinuing its mail-order commercial business which will result in the layoff of 156 employees at its Jericho, New York, headquarters. Layoffs will commence in July 2024.

As collateral damage, St. Cloud, Minnesota-based Fulfillment Distribution Center, a mail-order fulfillment services provider, plans to lay off 350 employees after losing its decades-long contract with Publishers Clearing House, its sole customer. Layoffs are scheduled between July 19, 2024, and February 28, 2025.

According to a company statement, “The layoffs are a strategic response to the reality of heightened postal, shipping, and supply chain costs along with the ongoing challenges that emerged from the post-pandemic world. This difficult decision comes after exhaustive analysis and careful consideration of PCH’s operational realities and the need to prioritize resources in areas for growth moving forward. These reductions allow the company to focus resources away from our commerce program and on our primary growth strategy of leveraging PCH’s core strengths and competitive advantages of providing consumers with free-to-play digital entertainment and games while delivering identity and data-driven advertising solutions for advertisers, consumer researchers, data and ad tech companies.”

AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

New York City, New York-based New York Daily News, an iconic New York tabloid known for its front-page headlines and photos, has announced its plans to close its Liberty View plant in Jersey City, New Jersey, and outsource its printing and inserting operations to the Woodland Park, New Jersey-based North Jersey Media Group-owned the Gannett Company.

The closure will impact 224 employees with separations scheduled for March 12, 2022.

The decision was driven by industry consolidation and the declining print readership in the digital age. New York-based Alden Global Capital acquired the paper in early 2021 and has a reputation for vigorous cost-cutting.

Some note that the move from the unionized 15-year-old, state-of-the-art Liberty View facility in Jersey City to the older non-unionized plant in Woodland Park, New Jersey is an attempt to wring concessions from the union and reduce costs.

AM I NEXT? NO LOVE AT LAKESIDE BOOK COMPANY (02/29/24)

FEBRUARY 29, 2024 — MANASHA FACILITY CLOSURE, 339 EMPLOYEES IMPACTED

The company has announced it’s permanently closing its print production facility in Menasha, Wisconsin due to “changing market conditions. The closure will impact 339 employees and is scheduled to start on June 7, 2024, and will continue until the entire plant is closed on June 21, 2024.

In addition to Menasha, the company will also shut down facilities in North Chelmsford, Massachusetts, and Cumberland, Rhode Island, by the end of the year as part of "plans to consolidate its manufacturing footprint."

CEO Dave McCree noted, "While it is extremely difficult to move toward ceasing operations at locations with such skilled team members, this decision will position us for sustained growth by maximizing the capabilities of our platform. Our colleagues in North Chelmsford, Menasha, and Cumberland have performed exceptionally well. This decision is no reflection on their efforts, and we will be assisting each of them in any way possible as they transition to their next career step, either within our company or to another position."

Operations will transition to other Lakeside Book facilities, the release states, and leaders will work "closely with all affected team members, providing severance packages, job placement assistance," and other support.

According to a company spokesperson, "Demand for four-color books for the education market has dropped over the last few years, and we do not expect that demand will return to historic levels. We tried to reduce costs temporarily as a result of falling volume, hoping and anticipating that the volume would return. Unfortunately, that volume has not returned, and we do not expect it to come back in the future at the same level. As a result, regretfully, we are taking the difficult steps we have announced today."
